Pred Centrom za tujce v Postojni

Zaprimo koncentracijska taborišča

English bellow

SHUT DOWN THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS - PROTEST

Postojna is home to a global tourist attraction, with the famous Postojna cave hosting masses of visitors every year. But very few are aware that Postojna is also home to one of Slovenia’s most shameful institutions, as the so-called “Center for the removal of foreigners” lies only a few minutes away from the cave.

The closed camp has been a site of brutal human rights repression since the very beginning. As a foreigner, you might find yourself trapped inside for up to a year with no chances of appeal and no contact with the outside world, simply for the crime of not sorting your residency papers. The detainees often state how the foreigners center is worse than a normal jail, where “you at least know what you’re in for and when you’ll come out, with a lawyer representing you, while in the foreigners camp you are left at the mercy of a single inspector”. Suicide attempts are an everyday event and the psychologically damaged detainees are often locked up in solitary confinement.

In recent months the shameful camp has expanded, as the state began a policy of detaining asylum seekers before returning them into the violent hands of the Croatian police. As the camp overcrowded the police opened a special “container department” set up in a large, barred warehouse, where asylum seekers are left without basic care, many still injured and without clean clothes, awaiting decisions from the Ministry of Interior Affairs. They receive food through the prison bars and very little is being done regarding health concerns.

It is clear why refugees are rebelling against this treatment. For over a month they have been trying to attract public attention through protests and hunger strikes. The message is simple: “We are not criminals, we just want to live normal lives”. They demand fair and transparent asylum procedures, to which the police has responded with violent repression and misleading of the media.

On Tuesday August 25th at 17h, we will join the protests happening inside the walls with a solidarity meeting in front of the camp. We will demand that the concentration camp is immediately shut down! We will also demand a stop to the violent mass deportations to Croatia, which have caused dozens of deaths on Slovenian territory alone.

Shut down the concentration camps!
Stop the violence on the borders!
Freedom for all!
